I recently updated my Windows 7 Ultimate machine to Windows 8 Pro. For some reason, if I connect a USB 2/3 device to either my USB 2 or USB 3 ports, the device will not work until I restart the computer. Once I log in after a restart, the device will work fine.

The interesting thing, is that when the device isn't working, it still shows up in the device manager.

When I view it I see:

When I try to install the driver:

Latest Bios
Latest intel inf drivers
Tried various versions of USB 3 drivers from station-drivers.
Worked perfectly under Windows 7.

Any ideas? This is really annoying. Every time I want to plug in a flash drive, I have to restart the computer after I plug it in.

You probably shouldn't have installed any other USB 3 drivers other than the ones provided by your MB manufacturer.

Did you do an in-place upgrade from Win7 to Win8, or did you do a fresh install?

You could try deleting everything under Universal Series Bus Controllers in Device Manager and letting the OS redetect your USB hardware.

The drivers I installed from station drivers were for my USB 3 chipset and were only installed after I noticed this problem. This probably also occurs with both the USB 3 ports and the built in intel USB 2 ports.

I will try your suggestion.

I tried to remove one of the usb hubs from the devices and it hung. The "confirm device uninstall" window came up and stayed up. :(
