usb devices not recognized

First, some specs:

epox 9nda3j
a64 3000+ (939)
6800gt
1gb mushkin pc3200
160gb wd hdd (taken from old computer)
enermax 460W whisper II

After I built the new computer I reinstalled XP pro from a CD and got SP2, AV, anti-spyware, mobo and video card drivers. I reinstalled itunes and tried to connect my ipod, but I got the "USB device not recognized" error. I checked device manager and saw no exclamation points, so I wasn't really sure what to do. I checked windows update and found nothing, and I tried uninstalling all usb controllers and then plugging my ipod back in - also to no avail. Anybody have some ideas for what else I can try to fix this? Thanks

I had this exact same problem on my friends new 64 3000+ 754 system I built last week. I thought it was something to do with the pinouts on the motherboard but evidently not. This was for his front usb ports, rear worked just fine.

You say you just built this thing, right? I'm assuming you're trying to plug the USB into one of the front ports on your case, which means you used your case wiring to attach to the motherboard, vs. the motherboard's own wiring harness.

Here's what happened to me under these circumstances with an Epox board (not a64, but athlon xp board):

My Antec case wiring came with 9 wires for the USB, essentially adding an additional ground wire. Well, OK, fine, there's 9 pins on the USB connector on the board.

However, with all 9 wires connected, the front USB wouldn't work. The Antec manual even said that only 8 wires were necessary for USB to work, but they provide the 9th anyway. So, on the USB pinout row with 5 pins, I disconnected the extra wire so the rows were symmetrical, wire-wise. USB on the front panel then worked fine.

Thanks for that page - I'll check that out for the front ports. However, the problem is occuring for both the front and rear ports. Any idea what could be preventing the rear ports from working properly after all the driver updates and reinstallations I did?

None of my usb ports worked until I fixed the front panel wiring.

yes, one bad ground will cause the whole system to not work. Even though it appears they are spearate, boards have one main USB hub, and all connections use it, daisychained together, slikkster hit the nail right on the head on this one, id be suprised if this doesnt remedy the issue, let us know though so we can keep going if we need to

I redid all my connections for the front usb ports - I think they were fine the first time, but they are in the right way for sure now. Still nothing. What's the next diagnostic step?

Did you try the back ones while the front ones were disconnected?

WOW, that supriises me, id say youve got a defective board, there isnt much else to try, as you know the ipod is good, youve installed all board drivers and so forth, any other usb devices to try JUST to be sure?

yeah i tried my camera and it didnt work either. guess there's not much else for me to do?

I read a topic in another forum about a guy having the same problem you're having. He remedied it by actually disconnecting the power from the wall (vs. just shutting down the pc with the off switch). Left it that way for a minute or so.

If that doesn't work, I would clear the CMOS, too (with the power disconnected from the wall). And make sure your cmos/bios settings are correct for USB after clearing/resetting.
