USB Device Not Recognized

Just installed the mother board and reloaded XP. I get a message on the task bar"USB device not recognized". This message flashes on and off at an irregular rate. Device manager shows an unknown usb device which comes and goes as the message is flashing on the task bar. I have 3 usb devices connected and they all show up in device manager. I have Vista RC2 on another drive and it doesn't show the behavior so it almost has to be an XP problem. Any ideas? All replies will be appreciated.

The problem went away for a day then came back. I have an older Creative PCI soundblaster with a game port. I had onboard audio enabled. I disabled the onboard audio and am using the Soundblaster audio and the problem disappeared. Don't know why. Never had this problem with the Asrock 939Dual I replaced. Probably didn't happen in Vista because Vista won't recognize the older sound card.

Thanks
Bill

Does your mobo need a USB driver? Is everything plugged tight? Have you tried just uninstalling the device and rebooting to see if XP will load its driver for it? I have an 'unknown usb device' showing in device manager but that causes no noticeable problem for me.

USB works fine in the Vista RC2 installation I have on the other drive. I wouldn't mind the unknown USB device in device manager but it's causing a pop up baloon on my task bar. The unknown device isn't always in task manager, it comes and goes with the message in my task bar. All 3 usb devices work fine and show properly in device manager. It has to be software because Vista works perfectly.

Seems to have fixed itself. Haven't seen problem for at least an hour and there are no unknown devices in device amnager.

Thanks for replies.
