USB device: Getting Win2k to re-recognize it

Driving me batty:

I have a Lexar USB 6-in-1 card reader. When I delete files off my smartmedia card within Windows, I have to use the "Unplug/Eject hardware" function to actually do the delete so I can take the card out and put it back in my camera. Otherwise, Windows will do it when it feels like it, i.e., long after I want to take the card out...

The problem is that if I take more pics and put the card back in the reader, Windows thinks it's still unplugged about half the time. I have to physically unplug the USB cable and plug it back in to get Windows to recognize it again.

Anyone know of a way (reg setting maybe?) to get Windows to re-detect it immediately? Maybe polling for it every 2 minutes or something?
