USB Device doesn't work after a restart

Have Dell Optiplex GX280, WinXP SP1 (corporate hasn't approved SP2 yet).

Everytime I reboot the installed USB barcode reader doesn't work, until I pull the cable out of the PC and then reinsert it. Then it works great.... until I reboot again.

The Mouse and Keyboard are USB and they still work...but not the barcode reader.

Any ideas?

Hot plugging is apparently necessary to let your system know that it is present for duty. There should be a line in the start up menu relating to your barcode reader driver and software.

There are several USB devices that require software to be installed BEFORE plugging in the device. That is how that housekeeping gets done. So, uninstall that too. Then - reinstall the software, reboot, and then plug in the reader. It should then install itself OK.

Thanks for the suggestion. (got called out of town past couple days)

Rebuilt the PC (FDISK/Reload windows/etc).

Made sure to install the drivers before attaching the device.

Attached device...woo hoo it works

Reboot the PC....and it doesn't work.

Unplug the cable...plug it back in... and it works.

Interesting...I've emailed our contact at the company, but haven't heard back yet.

BTW... THESE are the barcode readers we're using.

We used to use the PS/2 version...but these new fangled Dell's don't have PS/2 ports. 🙂

Still looking for more suggestions / ideas.

Thanks for the help.

It could be the device or cable. When I connect my mouse through a USB extension cable, it won't work after reboots without hot-plugging it.
