USB destroyed!!!

Those are PCMCIA slots, nowadays known as a "PCCard". There are both USB and Ethernet cards available for these slots at reasonable prices.

Meanwhile, are you sure that you have drivers loaded for your built-in Ethernet port?
 
Your ethernet port is a "fat" T-connector - a bit wider than the modem port. As RebateMonger says, the pictures you show are PCMCIA/PC Card (Cardbus). PC Express 34 or 54 are narrower. You laptop manual should specifcally identify those ports. If you are running XP or Vista, you should not need to oad any additional drivers for those ports. They are PnP.

BTW - ID your old laptop.
