I just saw this on MAKE's YouTube channel and thought it was one of the coolest things i've seen in a longtime. I am planning on putting one around SLC, UT.

Has anyone used/found one yet?

Just though i would share a cool idea

find a Dead Zone, download everything on it, RAR them all up with a password, put back on stick with a link to a survey to get said password. You'll be rich, so many people fall for the RAR password fill out survey thing it's not even funny.

It's a cool idea, and if everyone acted honorably, it would be fun. However, this is the world that gave us 4chan...

So, you're supposed to walk up and jam a laptop into the wall? Or do they think people randomly carry female USB cables around?

The first step in avoiding viruses is not putting yourself in a situation where you can get one. A USB plug could also be hooked up to a power source to fry the mb.

Good point. Its a cool idea in theory but maybe not the best in practice. Also poll added

Aside from the initial 'cool' factor, this is like 5 steps backward in today's world of cloud computing, mega fast sharing, & torrents.

It's anonymous, mostly... Someone could put a camera on the drop point. Might be an interesting social art(?) project.

Thats not the point of it.

What is the point? The OP is actually a year-old repost. People reported that these deaddrops had... *gasp* porn. Wow, how shocking and secretive.

Anyone can visit far more secretive stuff at the comfort of your home with few keystrokes.

This *might* have been great back before the Internet when sneaker-net was the only real way to move a file around. Maybe a floppy disc swap, where you dropped off a random file and took a random file home.

Nah, that would have sucked too.

EDIT: That said, I voted 'maybe' because I would be curious like George to see what was on there.
