USB Data Transfer Speeds

I am considering buyin ga Lexar Jumpdrive Lightning drive to get some better data transfer speeds. But do I really need to buy this to get faster speeds? Is there any other way to increase transfer speeds?

USB 2.0 is limited to (roughly) 30 MB/s. The latest breed of large SATA drives is about three times as fast as that - so no way.

Currently, if you want a fast external harddisk, you go with eSATA, FireWire 800, or SAS. Even FireWire 400 is faster than USB 2.0.

I've gotten near to 30MB/sec read speed with an external HDD on my USB connections. while it is theoretically capable of around 48MB/sec, I've never seen it happen. My Flash card reader is plenty fast for me, but I'm generally not trying to move large files. Do a search for reviews on the Lexar to see what real-world numbers people are getting.

Isnt USB 2.0 theoretically 480 megaBIT/s which would translate to 60 megaBYTE/s

I want actual speed, not theoretical. I'm testing different encryption schemes.

I always go by 10 bits per byte allowing for protocol overhead. If there is NO transmission overhead in the USB protocol then BB would be correct.
