Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 MB... came home and the system was locked up. Restarted it and it took several minutes for the mouse and keyboard to start working before I could even enter my PW. When I checked DM, it shows "unknown device" in the USB list- and every time I restart, I get a popup in the corner saying that one of my USB devices has quit working and I should check it. No new devices have been added in months. I think one of the USB controllers has gone bad but I'm not sure how to check it. I moved the mouse and keyboard from the USB ports next to the old style mouse plug down a couple of ports lower on the MB and the mouse and KB work instantly on boot-up like they are supposed to but I still have the DM problem. Any suggestions on how to proceed? I will add that the heat sink on what I guess is the northbridge is quite hot- 162deg F.

Device manager cannot recognize something that is attached so disconnect everything besides the kb and mouse and go from there. If the message goes away then it's something you just unplugged and use the process of elimination to identify what it is.
