USB conflict?

I have a Minolta QMS 2300W printer with included driver loaded connected to one of the USB ports on the rear of my Dell 2400 (P4/2.53 865GV chipset 512MB PC2700RAM) running WinXP SP1+. Whenever I connect SmartMEdia card reader to front USB port, the printer goes offline. Even stopping and removing reader doesn't rectify - only reboot. Thoughts?
