USB charging question

I work in a computer lab on campus and a guy just asked me if I could charge his PDA for him while he's in a meeting. It's a RIM device (no idea what that is, but I'm just reading the words on the case).

I plugged it into a powered USB port on the system, but I'm not able to install new hardware due to permissions in effect on the system. Will the PDA still charge over USB even though it's not installed?
