USB card reader disconnection issues

Problem- eMagic 8-in-1 card reader, USB 2, attached to a spare USB header on my motherboard (Leadtek K7NCR18DLM, nForce-2).

Latest BIOS, latest drivers for everything.

As soon as I shut the machine down (not restart) and power is killed (I presume) to the card reader, upon the next switch-on/boot, Windows picks it up as an "Unknown device" under the USB heading in Device Manager. Trying to force a driver fails as it only picks up one driver for that device ("Unknown device" :|).

The only way to get it back is to either remove mains power from the machine, or to remove the header plug while Windows is running and plug it back in.

I've checked USB wakeup / Power Management settings in the BIOS until I'm blue in the face, nothing seems to make a difference.

Any thoughts, folks?
