USB Card Madness

Recently, I installed a CompUsa brand USB 2.0 card in my computer. I have an older machine, and it didn't have any USB 2.0 ports installed. I had recently bought a USB 2.0-capable external CDRW and just now purchased a USB 2.0 ethernet adapter.

The board itself is actually made by ALI, apparently. Ever since I've installed it (and re-installed it), I've had issues, issues, issues.

Here's my system setup:

900 mhz Athlon
384k Ram
Windows ME
ASUS K7V motherboard
30 gigabyte hard drive
Soundblaster Live 5.1 value
Creative Modem Blaster 56k
Generic CD drive
Hi-Val external CDRW
Linksys USB 2.0 ethernet adapter

I haven't actually used the ether adapter yet for anything -- my dsl service gets turned on next week.

Here's what happens:

If I plug in the CDRW into the USB 2.0 card and boot it up, it gives me an amazing array of blue screens.

If I plug it into the regular USB 1.1 ports, no blue screens.

If I plug in the etherhet adapter and boot up, the system hands at the WinME startup screen.

If I don't ... you get the idea.

I have tried the card with numerous other USB periperals that I have -- printers, flash drives and such. They all work if I plug them in after the computer boots but seem to exhibit strange effects when plugged in from the start.

It's somewhat inconvenient to plug stuff in after the boot cycle -- and woe betide if I have to reboot and forget.

Is the card just hosed? I've removed it and the drivers completely several times and reinstalled it with latest drivers from the ALI web site. Still acts flakey.

I know it's not the not the best system, but I've made the decision to be a responsible adult and pay off my credit cards before buying something new and marvelous, so it's what I've got. If getting a new USB 2.0 card would solve things, then I'll gladly do that. The one I've got was only a $10 investment, and I guess I got what I paid for.

But if anyone has any brilliant ideas, I'd love to know them.

Something I've noticed in my hardware profile: It seems there are way too many USB ports installed. Maybe I'm just not understanding what I'm seeing. I've tried to remove them, but the computer keeps installing them as new hardware upon reboot, so maybe they're necessary.

Any help would be most appreciated.
