I'm trying to help a friend with sharing the internet through the cable modem. Problem is, they have a USB cable modem. So I figure I should be able to turn on WinXPs internet connection sharing and hook the wireless router up to that system and it should still work fine, right? Obviously, the computer will have to be on to share, and it isn't as elegent as getting a good ethernet connected cable modem or combination router/modem. Since ICS sets up its own DHCP service, if I disable that on the router and set it as an access point, all should be kosher right?

The Computer that is connected to the USB Modem should have a wired NIC.

The Wired NIC should be connected with a crossover CAT5e to a regular port on the Wireless Router, the Wireless Router should be configured as a Switch with an Access Point and set with a core IP of 191.168.0.1 ( http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html ).

Would it work trouble Free?

50% Yes.

40% Might be Quirky.

10% Would Not work.

Or tell the Guy/Girl to spend $69 buy a Normal Modem and have a Normal System.:light:

I know, I originally hated ICS back in the dial up days, so I figured this might be a pain. But we are trying to do this low budget style. Hmm... but the Motorola SURFboard is on sale for $40 down the street after two mail in rebates and doesn't say anything about activating a new account. Considering the router is only $16 after rebates, it may be worth it to save me the pain and suffering of having to help them everytime it messes up.
