Have a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 7573 laptop (Spec says the USB-C port is 3.1 w/ Displayport and charge support, but is not Thunderbolt 3.) with a USB-C/Displayport dock that works fine by itself:

Dock: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082KMKQQX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bought a 1m extension cable so I could tuck the dock under the desk and reduce clutter:

Cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PWDZ27W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cable seems to work at first (charges laptop, monitors work) but the computer won't recognize the USB devices.

Is this a cable spec thing (Like do I need to get a different kind of cable?) or do I just have a bum cable?

So I bought a replacement cable. Different brand. It came with a little card that said:

USB 2.0 REQUIRES SPECIFIC ORIENTATION

If there is the problem when connected with your mouse, keyboard or printer (USB 2.0 devices), please reverse the Female connector (receptacle) of the usb c extension cable.

So both cables actually work. I just needed to flip the connector around.

*facepalm*
