USB Battery Drain Patch for Windows / Intel CPUs

Howdy,
Earlier this year, Tom's and other websites documented the battery life issue surrounding Intel CPU-based notebooks.

What was the patch released by Microsoft that final took care of the problem?

Did a search through the forums, couldn't find the posting.

Thanks,
PCM

When you unplug the AC power from a Microsoft Windows XP-based portable computer, the battery may drain more quickly than you expect. Therefore, the operating system may shut down prematurely.

oh rly
it might be my nvidia 9000 gpu?
or my 5329034.23 ghz p1934?
my firewire2910231 ports
or my usb 12493124.2
ports?

Hi, First I've heard of this. I assume that the cause of the drainage is only when a USB powered device is left plugged in when the system is powered down. They must have left the USB +5 turned on. The patch probably turns it off when not needed. Jim

On the money, Jim. I noted this several months ago, and a temp fix was to unplug all USB devices when shutting down the laptop. The patch came as a routine update, but I also overlaid it separately.

It is not a huge drain - about 6 to 8 % over a period of a week.

The problem was that if USB devices were continuously polling, they prevented the system (while running) from putting the procesor into deeper sleep states, which led to substantially higher in-use power draw.

This bug caused early Core systems to be whalloped in battery life tests against Pentium M systems.
