USB Bandwidth, total or per port

I understand USB is capable of 480mbps.

Is this the total or per port.

Or do some computers have say 2 channels each at 480mbps and split each to say 5 ports.

It depends in the motherboard and chipset, generaly its 2 ports per usb root hub and each root hub has the 480mbs so generaly on the back pannel of most motherboards every 2 ports that are together share bandwith.
