USB backup recommendation

If time is an issue, then pretty much any enclosure plus the hard drive of your choice will work. Otherwise, I like Bytec enclosures from Newegg, as they are relatively cheap and perform well.

Just an enclosure? Or the whole drive?

For the whole drive, go with Western Digital drives. They tend to be pretty good.

For the enclosure, ADS-tech makes a good enclosure.

I just bought a vantech 3.5" enclosure (IDE) with a Maxtor 250gb/7200rpm/16mb drive. Works great on my powerbook and in windows/linux 🙂
