I got win98se on my toshiba satellite 2100cdt laptop.

I got this 4 port usb hub and windows shows it as UNRECOGNIZED USB DEVICE.

the hub works in all other machines and is automatically detected.

any idea what i can do?

Link for pic

Its the silver one with the cord. On mine the model # says USM-104N. weird.

Thanks

Davi

98SE will not automatically install the correct drivers for that device. First, remove the device and that includes in Device Manager. Next, install the drivers for the device. Then hot plug the hub and it should be OK.

You would not have that problem in XP.

problem is that i can't find drivers nor did they come with the device.

it looks like the one in that picture but it's NOT it because mine's a USB 1.0

Anyhow, any idea where to get drivers?

Thanks

Try using another USB device and see if it works.

Do the other systems that allow the hub to function run 98?

it works or other pcs', and other USB devices work on the USB port on my laptop
i e-mailed the manufacturer and the reply was that it should work and that there are no drivers for it because it doesnt need any.
he also said that it's supposed to be plug and play under 98SE

any other ideas?

Thanks

Davi

been a while...but I did this sooo many times

In the registry, there is hkey_localmachine--->Hardware??----->USB----->bunch of folders (vidXXXX&PIDXXXX, something like that) open the VID folder, click on the folder underneath it, on the right side it should show what device it is for. Unknown should be VID and PID of all zero's. Check every VID folder. When you find the hub or unknown device, delet the VID folder it is in, disconnect the hub, reboot, try again. Also, is this a powered USB hub? And what USB chipset does it show in Device Manager?

Do you have EVERY windows update? Also, what other USB devices are you using? Have you tried plugging a different USB device in that port because maybe that port isn't working right...

yes self powered, how do i find out about the chipset?

The following are screenshots.

Registry VID_0000&PID_0000
Unknown Device Properties
System Properties
Driver

Also, i ran windows update and downloaded and installed everything possible. There's only 1 USB port on this thing, thus I really need this hub to work.

I also did 'search for best driver"' pointing to the win98SE cd and Windows Update site.
Neither prevailed.

Almost forgot, I ran the USB downloads from microsoft's site also and installed both files called 115sv74 and 240075up.

Go to your device manager and find these two things.

Human Interface Device

Universal Serial Bus controller

Click the +button next to each category and list what you have.

There is a list of system services always running, make sure something to do with USB connectiosn isn't disabled, I forget exactly how to get to it, but I remember disabling some stuff in that and seeing USB related services.

You need HID installed for it to work.

It's on your Win98 cd. Or if you have the files on your hd, its in the base5 cab.

NEC OHC is bad news with self powered hubs oftentimes. Underpowered chipset in many laptops, not as bit a problem in desktops. I would try a Powered USB hub, aka one that plugs into the wall too...see if that changes anything.
