I don't think this will fit those Quantum drives - I think the specs on those say they're a 4" drive.... wouldn't that be too large for this enclosure?

Take note: since it's USB, it will only transfer @ 1.5 Mb/s. Might want to consider getting a removable hard drive cage for $8.00 at compgeeks if you have the space.

CarpeDeo--Yeah, my Dad and I have cages also. I just wanted USB to use from work/home pc xfer.

Maverick319--I know you just listed these for reference, but I just wanted to mention that my Dad first ordered one of these from Tiger. He couldn't make it work, spent time with the mfg., they couldn't help either, and told him to return it to Tiger, which he did, and still had the same problem with the replacement. So...he went with the datafab. It ran fine in W98SE, but, as I recall, he had to consult a bit with the mfg. to get it to be seen correctly in W2K....but, all is well now. I tried mine on a W2K pc, and it was seen fine from the get go.....maybe because I already had it partitioned. I dunno.

I kind of mentioned this because I'd seen people spending $200 for 20 gig USB hard drives. Seems that you can get much more for your $$'s if you go with the enclosure and supply your own hard drive. In my case, I already had the drive formatted and had stuff on it. I've got about 8 partitions on it, and it sees all fine. I haven't tried to see if I can defrag, Partition Magic, or DI to it directly. However, all partitions are seen in My Computer, just as if they were normal EIDE partitions.

Oh, I'd also seen a combo USB/Firewire on Datafab's site that I wanted my Dad to get, but he checked with them, and they don't have these in the states yet. I think they said October or November.

Ah, Randy and CarpeDeo both bring up good points. USB hardrives and CDRW's are slow, but sure. And they will not work on W95 machines, as W95 has little to no USB support built in. Atrac also pointed out tha NT 4.0 does not support USB as well. I forgot about that as I never had NT, but switched from W98 to W2K. Thanks for pointing that out.

And it looks like you have to set the HD up in a host machine, then transfer it to the enclosure. If you are looking to add a large HD to an older laptop or just need to take a HD with you, this might be just the ticket.

Also might be an exellent way to take your MP3 collection with you, just remember to pick up the USB box when you leave the RAVE.

Don't limit yourself by buying a 2.5" version, as it can only hold one thing, a Notebook HD. You can find 2.5" to 3.5" adaptors for 5 bucks online, and then at least you can drop something else in the box should your hardware needs change. Actually the 5.25" box is the most versatile, as you could put a CDRW, DVD-ROM or other devices in it and take it with you.

Here is a link to a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor, just to give you an idea of what I am talking about.

Here is a picture of a 3.5 to 5.25 adaptor, available at Newegg for 7.00 shipped.

And the page I found it on.

There are many different ways you could set up one of these enclosures, just don't buy one specifically for one item, so you can use it later for something else.
