prepare for superspeed.
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/usb-3.0-usb-3.1-becomes-usb-3.2,38699.html
Specification_____Previous Term____Technical Term_____Marketing Term
USB 3.2
__________N/A_______________USB 3.2 Gen 2x2____SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps
USB 3.1__________USB 3.1 Gen 2_____USB 3.2 Gen 2______SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps
USB 3.0__________USB 3.1 Gen 1_____USB 3.2 Gen 1______SuperSpeed USB

tldr when buying go by the listed speed since you wont remember the gen#, probably more important when typeC is the defacto form factor plug.

Not mentioned in the article is that we went through exactly the same nonsense way back in 2000 when they released USB 2.0 and decided to allow USB 1.1 devices to be called USB 2.0 Full Speed, while the actual, faster USB 2.0 devices were USB 2.0 High Speed. Because obviously "full" is better than "high"! Oh wait... was it the other way around?

The consistent pattern of confusing names makes it pretty obvious that they do it because certain manufacturers want to be able to label their devices with the new USB version number for marketing purposes, but don't want to spend the engineering effort to improve the hardware to match. Fortunately, most manufacturers have behaved sensibly in the past, and e.g. continued to label devices as USB 3.0 instead of 3.1 Gen 1.

wut in hell....

Maybe just call it by the bandwidth name:
USB 5.0
USB 10.0
USB 20.0

At least you know what you are getting.

even me, the tech nerd of all my friends is confused about all the diff USB cables, USB C has like 5 different standards, usb 2, usb 3. gen 1, gen 2, video, no video, power delivery, no power delivery, PD 60w, PD 100W, Data, No data. ugh...
