ok first time using my usb 3.0.

I am copying 4gb of data off my usb stick. 1258 files at 15.1mb/second.

That doesn't seem very fast to me. Copying off a drive is faster than copying to a drive.

This is copying off and it doesn't see much faster than USB 2.0.

Does my usb stick need to be 3.0 as well to gain the performance?

You're using a USB 2.0 stick in a USB 3.0 port and expect to get USB 3.0 speed, is that correct? If it is, you won't get USB 3.0 speed until you get a USB 3.0 stick and use it in a USB 3.0 port.

USB 2 device + USB 2 port = USB 2 speeds.

USB 2 device + USB 3 port = USB 2 speeds.

USB 3 device + USB 2 port = USB 2 speeds.

USB 3 device + USB 3 port = USB 3 speeds.

ok good info.

I thought USB 2.0 would still get a speed boost from a USB 3.0 port.

When I wanted to get a motherboard I was obsessed with having 4 USB 3.0 ports, but now I think... useless?

1 for an external hard drive (if you own one)
1 for a flash drive (if you own one)

what other purpose is there for USB 3.0? No benefit by using a mouse or keyboard or anything else on the port.

2 on the front of a case, and 2 on the back of the mobo. Heck even 2 on the back is good enough.

I've been living with 2 USB 3 ports quite comfortably for a long while now and in all honesty I could probably get by with one. I have no clue what these people use them for who have more than 4 on their board.

Also not all USB 3.0 sticks are equal. You need to get a *fast* one to take advantage of the USB 3.0 speed increase if your USB 3.0 stick is able to even max out USB 2.0 speeds.

I've got four WD My Book 3TB external drives connected via USB 3.0, and I'm very pleased with the performance. As good or better than my eSATA 2 external drive.

One note: FWIW, I have my wireless mouse's USB receiver in one of my front USB 3.0 ports; I'm assuming it is 2.0 (being nearly 5 yrs. old, this is a safe assumption), and when I plug in my USB 3.0 flash drive into the other port, I get typical 3.0 transfer rates. As far as I can tell, the transfer rate is not affected by the presence of the receiver.

I think the problem there is that USB3 runs BOTH USB2 and USB3 root hubs. If for some reason (bad cable, connection etc.) the device does not connect to the USB3 root hub, then you're stuck on the USB2 root hub...

I have had this happen a couple of times. USB3 seems to be a lot more sensitive to cable quality then USB2.
