Anybody know of a PCI-e card that adds a female port for one of these...
usb3.0_connector.jpg

... for motherboards that don't have one? I got a Thermaltake Chaser MK-I case and it comes with USB 3.0 on the top panel, but my Rampage III Gene motherboard doesn't have an internal USB 3.0 header, and I'd rather not use an adapter to run it outside the case to plug it in.

Does such a card exist?

Wow, I guess I've just been using the wrong search terms and looked at the wrong pictures... 2 questions though:

  1. Does the Molex/SATA power have to be connected for it to work, or is it just required to make the ports able to charge USB devices? I'm a little short on power supply connectors, so running that to the PCI-e slot will be a hassle...
  2. Just out of curiosity, how come sometimes it's a 20-pin header and sometimes it's a 19-pin?

PS currently going through BestBuy's list of USB 3.0 cards to see if I can find one with a header since I have a gift card there ;)

1. ??? You probably need it for anything that's going to suck up much power. You can get splitters and extensions, if needed.

2. The connector is 2x10 (20), but a pin is not used (19). USB 1/2 have a 9-pin connector for 2 ports that worked the same way. I haven't read the spec, but I would think it would be permissible to block that pin, but nobody need bother, because the connector itself is keyed.

1. Yes, the connector has to be connected. If you're running low on connectors, then a simple Y cable is all that's needed.
2. Don't know. I think the official is 19-pin. The connector has room for twenty pins, so that might be it.

Thanks guys, I ended up getting this one.

I'll also be getting a Molex extension and a 20-pin usb extension from FrozenCPU sometime soon.

Thanks for the help.
