USB 3.0 expansion card at PCIE x1?

Today mobo doesn't have the short coming USB 3.0 connector. It will need expansion card to have it.

Do you think the PCIexpress x1 slot on today mobos is sufficient for USB 3.0 bandwidth?

PCI 32-bit = 133 MBs
USB 2.0 = 60 MBs
Firewire 1394b = 98 MBs
PCI Express x1 = 250 MBs
SATA II = 300 MBs
SCSI Ultra320 = 320 MBs
USB 3.0 = 600 MBs

With USB 3.0 spec'd at 600 MBs, I wouldn't worry about buying an interface card just yet. :laugh:
It's like buying "ZR" rated tires for your Impala.
That Impala will never take full advantage of those tires.

The same holds true with current MBs, HDs, etc.
They can never take full advantaged of the proposed USB 3.0 standard.

A x1 slot would not be sufficient, it tops out at 500MB/sec (half that for PCIe 1.x). On current computers you'd need an x4 (or larger) slot to feed it.

* Of course the timing for the USB 3.0 launch is such that it's only a bit ahead of PCIe 3.0, so I'd expect to see USB 3.0 slots hooked up to a single lane once PCIe 3.0 hits

Thanks. I am about to get a new mobo now, I was just thinking it would be nice if it can host a coming USB 3.0.

There is nothing but PCIe 1.x for non-graphics peripheral or controller cards.

Are you sure about that? AFAIK PCIe 2.0 is not limited to specific devices. Anything built for it can use it, but really no one except the aforementioned devices are using it.

There are PCI Express x4 and x8 storage controller cards.
x1, x4 and x8 can all be used in x16 slots.
