USB 2 transfer speed at 12 KB/sec...why?

A friend handed over an old external drive, the 160GB WD1600B015. Spec-wise, it's USB 2. I formatted it, and on a lark thought of using it to back up my images directory on my laptop (Lenovo T410) - sized about 60GB.

I am shocked to see that it's copying at a rate of around 12KB/s (as reported while copying). yes, KB, not Mb. Looked like it would around 158 hours, so I stopped it, disconnected and connected using the only USB 3 port on the laptop. Yes, I know it wouldn't help much as the HDD is USB 2, but still.

Now, if anything, it seems to have slowed down further! For whatever reason now the copy rate is not displayed but by my calculation it's around 8KB/s!

Any idea what's the problem?

I use Total Commander (a file manager); would it help if I used command line?

Oh - did not think of that. Guess I should think of this as a backup copy...

Maybe I should replace the hard-drive inside with one of mine and test the speed.
