usb 2 to firewire adapter? Do such things exist? I've got a 120 gig external usb 2 hard drive (thanks to hot deals) and my laptop only has usb 1. It does have a firewire port on it though. Yes, I know I should just buy the PCMCIA (spelling?) card for USB 2.0 but it would be much more convenient for my friends who have firewire on their pc's if I could just plug the hard drive into their pc.

Why did you buy a USB2 hard drive if you didn't have a USB2 port?

There appears to be no such beast yet. I didn't even find a 1.1 to firewire adapter.

USB2 is backward compatible with 1.1. You should be able to plug it into your friends' 1.1 USB ports as well as your own if you don't want to buy a USB2 PC Card, and while it may be slow, it'll work.

That's what I thought. I bought it because it was a super duper price and I knew I could get a USB card for very little expense and that all of my friends have at least a USB 1.1 slot on their pc's. It works just fine on my laptop now. I was however thoroughly impressed when I brought it over a buddy's house and he transferred over 10 gigs to it in less than a minute. :)

Firewire is a derivative of SCSI - basically it is the separated delta between SCSI I and SCSI II. That is why there are Firewire/SCSI adapters for SCSI i devices. USB is totally different. Firewire is mature technolgy - has been around for years in the Mac world. USB 2 is rather new on the scene.
