for some reason I can't get my external harddrive to work as USB2. it was working fine before i formatted my computer. so i know that it IS capable of USB2 speeds.

I do have SP2 installed.
my firewire does work at full speed.

just usb 2 isnt working, usb1 speed works fine.

any suggestions?

yep, chipset drivers are installed. i installed the nforce 2 unified drivers.

my mobo is a epox 8rda+

edit: would it matter if i plugged the harddrive into a usb1 port on my oldschool laptop, then repluggd it into my comp's usb2? it shouldnt... rite.

Remove everything under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in device manager and reboot.
Windows will reinstall everything and it should work.

It could be disabled in ur epox's bios

i have checked the bios - it is at 1.1/2.0

is there anything special about the epox 8rda+ that i need to install to get usb2 to work? i can't find my original cd that came with the motherboard... i was going to try installing drivers from that...hmph..

I had this problem earlier. Here's what I did:

-Control Panel
-System
-Hardware tab: Device Manager
-USB Controllers <Expand>

There should be one marked with a (!) or a (*) next to it. That's what it was for me. Click that one and:

-Disable
-Enable

Worked for me after that.

(harddrive is not plugged in)

Oh. Dunno then.

One more thing: in the BIOS when you set your USB "mode", there' FULL_SPEED and HIGH_SPEED (for me). I forgot which was which, try otggling between the two.

the pentium guy:

i don't have any front ports: and im pretty sure all my 4 or (6) back ports are 2.0...

also when i check the bios i can only select either 1.1 or 1.1/2.0 or disabled.

i can't figure this out! ahhhh and I need it to work because i'm borrowing a friends external drive to store my info when i formatted...

If u have gmail, u can put files in ur email, then make a virtual gmail drive on ur comp, then extract. Repeat until all files are on. Also, from where you were in the pic, right-click, and go to properties and then you'll see what is going on. Hopefully, all goes well. Good Luck!

While the gMail drive would work, it would just be stupidly slow (most internet connections are less than 50kb\sec upload) You also can't upload .exe files.

I think a crossover or router\hub\switch + straight through would be easier.

Or you could just have the stuff transfer overnight.

Unless you get it fixed of course 🙂

i would do the network thing, but i don't have another computer in the house that has USB 2.0

i might just transfer it over night. but it's really slow...=

thanks for all the comments guys...i can't get it to work.

There are several things that came to my mind from this; I would first try looking at the installation CD and really making sure the drivers you installed were for the USB ports, sometimes they are different. Next, I would look for updated drivers from Epox and see what they have. I would suspect you may not have installed the drivers because it is win2k that you are using. I bought a USB 2.0 card for my aging motherboard and it installed just fine without the drivers; except it wasn't 2.0. I didn't realize my mistake for about a month.

If that fails, set up a network between your working computers and just transfer files to another computer you own. However, if you must use the external hard drive get a firewire card and use that.
