USB 2.0 to IDE adapter

I want to buy a DVD-writer for my laptop PC. Instead of using a fortune on an external model i was wondering to buy a USB 2.0 IDE adapter and use an internal device externally. Im looking on plextor internal DVD writers. Would this external configuration for an internally device make any problems for me? About updating the firmware with a flash update program, will this give me any problems when it is not connected to the IDE cabel from the motherboard.

(And will cooling of the DVD-writer be a problem when placed outside a case with a fan?)

Nope as I use the exact config but with an NEC DVD Writer via USB Hi-Speed cause it exceeds the ATAPI Limits...Cooling has been no problems here

I use a backup-Q easygo that I picked up from compgeeks. Works fine so far w/ both hds and cdroms... it is sad, tho, that a whole freakin' external usb 2.0 case can be had for less than 30 bucks, but these external 'adaptors' cost closer to 50.
