Anyone know if these newer babies starting to come out can be still ran in USB 1.1 ports?

I know USB 1.1 DEVICES work in USB 2.0 ports, but what about 2.0 devices? :(

I'd love one of those 256mb USB 2 drives the size of my thumb, but I refuse to buy one unless it works in all the machines I use :(

thanks.

*cough* FAQ *cough*

YES In order for it meet USB 2.0 spec it must be backwards compatible with USB 1.1. It will just run slower!

Another way of phrasing your question is:
"Hey! Does this device which says it's USB 2.0 compliant meet the USB 2.0 spec and work just like any other USB 2.0 device?"

You positive man?

I mean those USB 2.0 hard disks / burners would be USELESS in 1.1 ports :(

Besides, the USB bus speed isn't the limiting factor, The flash speed is. USB 1.1 is still faster than most flash drives and certainly compact flash can write anyway.

Except burning @ 40x in a 1.1 port would result in coaster upon coaster........

not really, a 40x burner would have underrun protection, plus it would probably default to 4x if it were attached to a 1.1 bus.

Yeah, like I've already said three times, it would run slower.

IF it has burnproof, OR it would coaster otherwise, that's all I'm saying.
Either way @ 80$ US, I'm sorely tempted on this whole 256mb flash disk with a USB 2 i/face :)

Don't all 24x or higher CDRs need underrun protection to handle the speed increments during a burn? I thought this was necessary to keep the burn from failing when the speed went from 24x-32x-36x-40x or something like that during a burn...

anyone else able to confirm this?

I must admit, you have me there- I'm not certain, I beleive it may well be a possibility.

None the less this is a silly argument :) - who cares if USB 2.0 doesn't work or does work in USB 1.1 slots for cd burning - HOPEFULLY it does - that makes it nice tech but not effective

However for my little thumb memory cards I must admit it would be nice to know for sure - I'm FAIRLY certain based on the responces I've received around the place that it does - nothing concrete yet though.

I've been using my USB 2.0 Mini Drive for over a month now on my work comp which still supports 1.1 spec. When I go home I plug it in my 2.0 spec port and it works too (well it should).

So yes I would say it works (which others have already stated). ;)

That's not always true. Some compact flash is slow but others aren't. 24x compact flash pushes 3.5MB/s. It's entirely possible to make flash memory that is almost as fast as DRAM but stuff like that commands a big price premium right now. (check out AMD's flash memory info on their site.)
