Hi all,

I read that the new Intel 845(g) chipset will support both USB 2.0 in addition to both SDRAM and DDR.

Any word on when this will be available in portables?

I am shopping around for a new laptop in the next month or two and wanted to see if I could get in on some faster data transfers...

thanx

If you want faster data transfers on a laptop, pretty much the only game in town right now with built-in ports is Firewire. Fortunately, for stuff like drives, etc., the peripherals cost the same as USB 2 versions, and Firewire is the format of choice of digital video.

If you really want USB 2.0, you can get PCMCIA adapters though.

is this support coming for more and more laptops, though? anyone know if the chipset will make its way into the new P4-M designs?

do you think that when usb 2.0 hits the intel chipset that it will become the defacto industry standard, making firewire less useful? if firewire is all i can get on a portable, will it continue to be a valid method of data transfer (i.e. will they be making peripherals that support it once 2.0 - which is faster - takes hold)?

welcome your thoughts.

just trying to make an informed buying decision.

Well, like I said, if you're into digital video, Firewire is the standard (eg. Sony iLink, etc.). For other devices probably both are OK (although hard drives will be slower on USB 2 than on Firewire for a while).

why would hard drives be slower on usb 2.0? isn't it supposed to be faster than firewire (by about 80 mbps?)
