USB 2.0 Problems on Striker Extreme

Hey guys, I have a painfully irritating problem with my new build. It's a beautiful machine, E6750, Striker Extreme, 8800gt and a Viewsonic 22inch. It all fell together like Lego accept for the USB 2.0 drivers.

The drivers on the disk that came with the motherboard refuse to install saying my version of XP is running SP2 so windows will have already installed the drivers. Which it didn't.

When I hunted down Microsoft update KB822603; the USB 2.0 update that came out with SP1. It refuses to install saying the patch is older than the service pack I'm trying to install it onto. It says it only installs onto SP1.

What have I done wrong to get to this point? I thought something as big as USB 2.0 was handled by Windows updater. More importantly how do I fix it? I can't see a way around the patches refusing to run accept a full wipe and reinstall.

so you recently installed SP2 on your XP system?

is there a yellow exclamation mark at the USB in device manager?
