USB 2.0 Problem - This device would function faster if... Help!

Hi guys,

I recently connected an external drive to my USB and it told me "This device would perform faster if you connected it to a Hi-Speed port." or something like that. I tracked the problem down to the fact that I didn't have an enhanced USB controller installed, or the proper USB Root Hub. I found the driver CD and put the files on, everything installed ok.

Now my problem is that all the devices are still registered to the generic controller and not the enhanced one in my device manager. I tried removing the generic but then my mouse and keyboard stop functioning! When I reboot my PC, it just re-installs the generic controller and I'm back to the same issue. I've got both set of controllers showing up in the device manager, how to I switch the default? There are no options in the enhanced one that let me set something like this.

any ideas?

I've got an MSI K8N-F board I think (at work right now, can't check specifics) running windows XP Home.

Thanks in advance
Regards,
Songix

So, you are seeing the Enhanced USB controller in Device Manager with no yellow cautions?

Are you using the front USB port on your case to connect the USB hard drive? At least one case maker (Antec) made some front USB ports that intentionally limited the speed to USB 1.1.

That's so lame. Why would they do such thing?

From what I've read, it was a power draw issue that Antec was concerned about. I don't remember any more details, and it's no longer the case.

I'm in luck that you happened to bring up the issue. It made me question the dirt cheap price on a case I was planning to buy and went through the specs more carefully. Although 1.1 isn't explicitly mentioned, all other cases of the highest tiers list 2.0 for their front USB connectors.

No yellow flags. =(

Would it be possible to update the drivers of the regular USB Controller to the Hi-speed ones? Say I just specify the location of the files >? or do the drivers have to match the name

It's unlikely that's a problem. It might be that the wiring isn't USB 2.0 certified, but I've never seen anybody have a problem even with 1.1 cables and connectors. The Antec case was unusual, but something to keep in mind if you have older Antec cases.

OP:
If you can't find an easy solution, consider an add-on $10-$20 PCI USB card. Odds are, it'll pop right up in USB 2.0 mode.

Possibly a wonky chipset issue? Maybe rerun the chipset installer? That is odd, Ive not seen any board with two completely seperate USB controllers, one being 2.0 and one being 1.1. Thats just, odd.

crap, i have the same issue.

running vista 64 bit on ASUS M2V-MX mb which does have USB 2.0. when i plug in my USB2.0 external drive, the os will mount it as USB 1.1 and say my device can perform faster...

looks like it isn't "enumerating" correctly. most of the fix that i've googled says reinstall OS...

I'm also having this issue with an MSI K8T Neo2-FIR, Windows XP SP2, running the latest (as of April 2008) Hyperion drivers from viaarena.com. Even the ports on the motherboard's built in I/O backpanel have this issue, so I know it's not my Antec Sonata II case.

The other thing that irks me about this is: I've had this motherboard for three years. I've had USB 2.0 devices work properly at USB 2.0 speeds with it. Something must have changed, but for the life of me I can't determine what.
