USB 2.0 ports through PCI card, probs at bootup

I think I have tried everything...so I turn to the experts.
I recently got a new PC and installed the provided USB 2.0 ports in the front. These ports connect to a USB 2.0 PCI card and then connects to the motherboard. I've followed the installation instructions, drive installations and made sure the pin connections are correct. The bios was flashed to the latest, and no Window's updates needed.

Problem = During startup, it seems the PC doesn't pickup the devices I have installed in the USB ports, including my Logitech Wingman gamepad and Intellimouse Optical. I changed the PCI slot and disabled "assign IRQs for USB" in the bios and was able to view the gamepad but there is a driver problem with the HID in device manager. Plugging the devices into the back ports that go directly to the motherboard works fine.

I'm running Windows XP Pro on my Soyo Dragon P4S Ultra mobo, with the EBOX USB 2.0 ports installed.

I don't want to keep trying the uninstall-reinstall method everytime I bootup, nor do I want to keep re-plugging devices into the ports to get Windows to recognize them.

Thanks in advance for your ideas...:disgust:

Howdy,
There's sometimes a BIOS setting named something like "Recognize USB Devices When Plugged In", which is to say, unless this feature is enabled, the BIOS will not recognize the device if you plug it into the port after the PC is already running.

Just a shot in the dark.

Yeah, this BIOS doesn't have a setting as such, just the one I mentioned already (assign IRQs for USB).

There was one other setting in the BIOS:
"USB00 = Embedded Bus"
"USB01 = Embedded Bus"

I changed those values also but no luck. I believe those 2 are the ports in the back. There was no USB03 through USB06 in the BIOS that would reflect the 4 front ports.

I notice that the lights on the device are active until the XP splash screen is displayed, then they shut off. That leads me to believe that this is more of an XP issue rather than the motherboard or BIOS...?

For instance, in the BIOS I set the default Numlock to be on, it remains on until XP comes up and then it is turned off...

Unless you have downloaded and installed the Microsoft USB 2.0 drivers for XP, you will have problems. It has nothing to do with the BIOS or source of USB 2.0 - fact, XP does not support USB 2.0 unless it is patched.

Getting the Microsoft USB 2.0 upgrade for XP is a real Catch-22 operation - but it can be done.

I have the latest updates. I also checked all the devices in Device Manager, nothing un-necessary or conflicting. Thanx for the advice.

Try it with a USB 2.0 hub (Belkin's is excellent) connected to one of the rear ports on the PCI card. The problem could be in the transfer cable to the front ports.

I have been having all kinds of problems with my usb2.0 drivers for win2k. I bought this wonderful new Iomega CD Burner 24x10x40x, but I don't have any drivers! M$ has Win2K usb2.0 drivers in Beta but I cannot seem to get a copy. If someone has usb2.0 W2k drivers, and would like to email me a copy I would really appreciate it.
