Hi -

as the title says, I can't get my USB ports to recognize my usb2.0 devices. I always get the little message "device could go faster if plugged into a 2.0 port" even though when I check device manager I have "PCI class USB 2.0 Enhanced host controller" and USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" installed and working, along with the old style usb. When i disable the old usb 1 drivers the ports just don't work at all.

My setup: Windows XP home, with sp 2 and all the latest updates.
Asus A8N-sli Deluxe with bios updated as of today.
1 gig ram, athlon 64

I have tried the ports attached directly to the mobo, the ones that plug into the board for front of case access, and the ones that plug into mobo and attach to a rear case slot. All same lack of 2.0. I have checked bios and USB 2.0 is enabled. I tried disabling legacy support with no effect.

I attempted to install the USB 2.0 drivers that came with the mobo, but got the message this was not neccessary for windows XP.

The version on my USB 2.0 drivers is 2.2.2.0 and the date is 8/1/2004

I would greatly appreciate any help with this problem. Its driver-ing me crazy :p

double check your BIOS. on my K8N-E, there's an option to set the USB ports to "USB 1.1 Only" and "USB 1.1+USB 2.0" and also, there's the USB 2.0 Controller mode, which selects between "HiSpeed" and "Full Speed" "HiSpeed" is the option for 480Mbps, rather than "Full Speed" which is only 12 Mbps.

That said, I'm certain I have the right settings in my BIOS too, and I can't get my new USB hard drive to run at 2.0 speeds either. I'm running Win2K though.

My bios only has 3 options: usb enabled and then usb 2.0 enabled and usb legacy enabled. I disabled legacy but it made no difference in windows, so Im thinking maybe its overwridden by xp anyway :\ I don't see anything regarding full speed or high speed but my mobo documentation is clear that the USB 2.0 will operate at 480Mbps.

As for service pack 1, I don't know that it was installed specifically, but wouldn't updating to sp2 and subsequent updates insure that I was in fact up to date? Is there a way to do sp1 at this point and is there a reason to believe thats the issue?

Thanks,
Pete

Try going into Device Manager and update/redetect each device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Just update, and install each one automatically. There's probably an easier method of doing it. But that's worked for me when USB 2.0 hasn't worked properly. I think since I slipstreamed SP2 into my Windows CD that it works straight away but I can only confirm that when I build another system, which is in the next day or so.

I tried update to each device and one of them did seem to "take" - the makeup of my device descriptions has changed, with no mention of 2.0 but when I plug in a flash drive i dont get the "this device can be faster" message, and a 10meg file transferred in about 1 second, so I will assume it is now working

Thanks for the help

Don't use USB 2.0 drivers from your motherboard CD. Usually those are all out of date. From my experience, stick with Windows' drivers for USB. I had the same problem and when I updated it, the name changed but it worked.
