USB 2.0 laptop cards, or FireWire

I have a question, I'm looking to get a Laptop and unfourtinally the Dell I'm looking at doesn't have USB 2.0. I want to run an external CDRW + an external HD off the same system. Would you guys suggest I add a USB 2.0 card, or just use the laptops FireWire ports. There shouldn't be any real difference, but what do I know? 🙂

Firewire provides a faster transfer rate than USB2.0, overall, despite the higher peak rate of USB2.0. Use what you've got, since it's plenty fast, rather than paying for something you don't need.

Agree with Lord Evermore - I use my Firewire port on my laqptop to connect to an external Firewire burner. But - usually laptop 1394 ports are 4-pin - in powered. They are intended for cameras, so your external device has to have its own power.

External cases for 3.5 inch and 5.25 inch drives are externally powered anyway. Only 2.5 inch drives ever can be powered with Firewire power.
