USB 2.0 IDE Adapter from xpcgear.com working?

I purchased it recently but couldn't get it to work. I've tried it on Windows 2000 and XP. Both can't get the driver installed correctly. Does it work for you?

I forgot to add info: My HD is set as Master. The adapter also freezes my PC if it's on when booting. Remove it would boot fine. Maybe I got a bad one or maybe it does not work anyone? Please let me know if it does work on your PC.

If you're refering to the IDE USB HD external cables that you just plug in and go i have 1 that works fine but not from XPCgear...no speacial drivers were needed

I've have a HD and DVD-RW I need to connect casually. It would be wonderful if it works. Windows XP would report it found a USB device or new hardware. Then, it disappeared and nothing showed up. Looking at Device Manager, it is in yellow with a question mark. On Windows 2000, it asked to install a driver, and I asked it to find it itself, it found a generic USB driver and then nothing comes up.

Yeo that's what mines is like and no drivers are neccessary so I would consider 1 RMA

Edit=Couple other things to try:
Jumpers on Master and Cable Select:
Try other cables

Can you connect anything and anytime to it without problems? I only had one success with one old IBM drive and one CD-ROM reader. When I turn it off and switch to another HD, it becomes question mark again. Then, I could never get it to work. I read it somewhere that this device can recognize only a few brands of HD like Seagate, Maxtor, but not Western Digital. I can't get my new Maxtor 120GB to work on it either.

My drives are set to Master. I've tried it on another PC. Take off other USB devices. Switched to different USB cables. It's about the same result. Hard to mount anything. On one PC, it freezes the PC at any screen of the booting process. Once it's disconnected, booting resuems. Once it's connected, booting stops. Maybe the technology is not stable yet, or maybe I got a lemon.

I've had no problems with Opticals and various HD's...just hooked it and it's all good ...The one I have is an elcheapo Sabrent

I have one from Bytecc, it shows up in device manager. I don't get a letter assignment to transfer data. I don't understand this, I had one from ebay, it was flimsey and made real cheap, but it registered, gave me a letter assignment in less than 30 seconds. I used it until a week ago when it was ruined in a teenager stampede through my house. I bought this one from Bytecc, and are in email support with them, unfornunately all I can get in is two emails a day. The one I had I cannot find on Ebay. Will be in touch with results

I have one of that brand. What I have found is that it can be plugged into the IDE connection on a drive so that it is off by one set of pins. This maybe causing the problem.

I was going to say as PELarson mentioned that it may be plugged in wrong. If it really can be shifted a set of pins, then the IDE connector on that adapter must not be keyed, so it could also be plugged in upside down!!! Check your connection VERY carefully.
. As others have said, that type of device should work smoothly with no special drivers on XP. For Win2k, you must have the latest Service Pack and any other USB updates (usually come with your mobo) installed to work with high speed USB 2 ports. Win2k came before USB 2 high speed. Once you have all the updates done to Win 2k it should also work w/o any other drivers.
. Installing the ASPI layer software from Adaptec may also help (it amost never hurts) - it does wonders for some optical drive situations. I know it says for SCSI, but trust me on this! The package comes from adaptec and includes a checker so you can tell if ASPI is already installed and what version. You only want to have one ASPI layer installed. Adaptec's seems to work well for anything that needs it.
