I have seen a couple of posts indicating that Microsoft has put them up at the update site, but I find no trace of them. Now I could use them. Anyone got a clue as to where they might be or if they even exist?

The reason why you don't see them is because you possibly already have "3rd party" drivers installed or your Mobo does not support it.

An older post....

Even MS says they are avail... Look here and click the DOWNLOAD tab... they say go to the windowsupdate page.

BTW: If you have a PCI USB 2 card, why not use the drivers that came with it? I would think those would work better anyway.

Thanks, DocDoo. I think I know what is going on . . . there is nothing that shows on Windows Update because Microsoft insists on managing that for me.:)

I have a combo 1394 and USB 2 PCI card installed and it worked perfectly in ME. The Firewire side works AOK in XP. Yesterday I decided to get a USB 2 hub, (Belkin) and it installed OK, but the driver that XP found (USBHUB.SYS) was "unsigned" and really created problems with BSOD's quoting "Bad Pool Call." It worked as far as the devices were concerned, but too much instability was introduced. So, I removed it and have shelved it until I can get something better.

I sent Belkin an email asking for a driver for their hub but have gotten no reply. It really shouldn't need one. I put my old Entrega USB 1 back on and all is cool . . . but no USB 2.

I guess I'll stick to Firewire. Thanks to Apple, it works! :)

from belkin's FAQs
Q: Where can I get the driver for Win XP?
A: When Windows XP was released in October, USB 2.0 support was lacking but promised as soon as possible. Users with USB 2.0 host controllers can download the driver by going to the Windows Update website, www.windowsupdate.com. (Note: PC's without USB 2.0 card or device on your PC will not be able to find the driver update on the Windows Update site)

Well, this Sunday I will be installing an Adaptec Duo Firewire/USB2 card and hope I don't have a similar issue (using WXPP).
Corky, I even look at the MS corporate update site to see if I could find your drivers, but none were listed (specifically anyway).

Yeah, that is the nice thing about firewire...true plug-n-play and not plug-n-pray ;)

Here's an update. I got it working now, but have been unable to crack Microsoft's anti-driver download firewall. Talked with the product manager at Belkin, and he at least got me running with no BSODs. I deleted the OrangeMicro USB 2.0 Controller, and then deleted all of the old OM driver files from SYSTEM32\DRIVERS.

I also downloaded a new OM driver set for USB 2.0. With that, I rebooted and it found the controller . . . and the new OM driver INF file made it end up as a "NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Controller B0." I then added the new Belkin hub, and it installed as a Generic USB hib on that controller. So far it all works, but I don't think it is USB.

According to the Belkin tech, the only way to get the Windows Update site to provide any sort of clue as to a new USB driver, it is necessary to go there with nothing related to USB installed or in use. That sounds wierd . . . but this whole thing is wierd. I just wish M$ would post drivers in a library . . . go to their catalog under USB 2.0 and you end up with nada as well.

Viva Firewire! I am now convinced to forget about a USB 2.0 CDRW and get another Firewire one.

Man that is some weird sh*t. I am thinking it is hardware related and the 1394/USB2 card is not relaying all the required info to the OS, thus letting it know what it really is. I will soon find out...

What are you using USB2 for? What devices are you plugging into it?

Why can't you find it from the Windows update site? Go to windows update, select 'Windows Update Catalog', "Find driver updates for hardware devices", follow tree (usb is under 'Other hardware').

ust went through this same BS yesterday. I have a new Asus P4B266 mobo with USB 2.0 support. I know there are USB 2.0 drivers on M$'s site because I just got them (via Windows Update) about 1 week ago for a different board . I just couldn't find them this time no matter what.

My Device Manager showed a yellow question mark under "other devices" so I knew it did need the driver but M$'s automatic Windows update wouldn't pick up on it. Tried via Corporate Update also, still no luck. I spent almost an hour searching the site. Did what Bsobel suggested also, with no luck either. Popped in another HDD and Ghosted an earlier image of my OS and tried again. Finally it worked. The driver is called "Windows USB driver version 5.1.2600.0" I got it via automatic update so I couldn't save it to disk. Searched the site for it afterward but couldn't find it anywhere.

WTF is going on here? Is this some Top Secret sh!t? Good ol' M$. Maybe they're making it a pain in the ass because they don't particularly support 2.0? Nah, that would be anti-M$ paranoia on my part. There must be some innocent explanation....

Ralf - I tried all those paths including the Windows catalog. The uncool thing is that if you ask for anything regarding USB 2.0 in a search, M$ gives you jack. What we really need is for some enterprising person that has downloaded and has those drivers to post them somewhere. What's the file size?

As for what devices . . . right now I would attach an external CDRW to the USB 2.0 port, plus all my existing USB 1.X devices.

Anyway, the hub is working now and has been very stable for many reboots over the past 24 hours (software upgrades - IE's security patch, and the weekly AV DAT update, and now finally Symantec has 3 updates for NSW 2002, and lastly, ATI posted a new certified driver (6015) for the Radeon series.) Lots going on now. :)

OK . . . end of story! I found the darn M$ USB 2.0 driver set. The problem is that it is not keyed or labeled as such. Here is how you get there:

1. Go to the Windows XP Update Site
2. Click on Windows Catalog to open it.
3. At the bottom of the list of stuff is "Other" which includes USB.
4. Select Microsoft as the maker, XP whatever as the OS, and plain old USB as the key ( no 2.0!)

You get this file:

Microsoft USB Driver version 5.1.2600.0 (Date posted 15 February) D/L size 290 KB.

That is it! You won't recognize it when it is downloaded, but it is a CAB file that contains:

hccoin.dll
msusb2ci.dll
usb2x.cat
usb2x.inf
usbechi.sys

Those are the guys! (and I got 'em . . . but it sure was a struggle. Why does Microshaft make it so difficult? :)

corky-g is right about trying to search things on microsoft... especially true with microsoft knowledge base. You can put in exact error msg and it wont come close. Often times you have to search on one obscure keyword.. like trying to find issues on STOP error msgs, cant pull it up using STOP as the keyword. Knowledge base sucks since they redid it to look more like XP too.

Glad I came across this.. have a few clients that need this update.. now I know exactly how to find it.

<< use the link in this article to hook up with the drivers! :) >>

bacillus... I just want to point out. The drivers that are in that link you posted (from the other article), are only for Intel based boards. I thought I would mention it since that can cause problems for those that did not know.
