Hey all,

I'm not a n00b when it comes to fixing computers, but this problem has me stumped. I'm stumped because I don't want to fix the problem by re-installing windows... but, it looks like I might have to. Anyways, down to the problem:

When I connect my Creative Zen Micro, a USB 2.0 compliant MP3 player, to my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939).. I get a little USB icon down in the task bar which says this:

The Creative Zen Micro is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port

--------------------------------

The hubs shown in bold type have free ports that can support the HI-SPEED USB device.

-OE Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
-OE USB Root Hub (8 ports)
-OE Unused Port
-OE Unused Port
-OE Unused Port
-OE Unused Port
-OE Unused Port
-OE Unused Port
-OE Unused Port
-OE Unused Port

Recommendation
Disconnect the Creative Zen Micro from its current port and then connect it to one of the ports on a hub shown in bold type.

Here's what the USB devices in my device manager look like:
- -OE Universal Serial Bus Controllers
-OE Creative Zen Micro
-OE Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
-OE Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
-OE Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
-OE USB Root Hub
-OE USB Root Hub
-OE USB Root Hub

-OE is the USB Icon..

Ok. So, here's the low-down. I have repaired Windows on this computer.. the OS was installed previously on another motherboard and I transferred the harddrive to this newer motherboard. Here are the things that I have done as an attempted remedy:

1. I installed the motherboard drivers ... which included the USB 2.0 drivers and I've tried EVERY USB port on the motherboard with no results! My MP3's still transfer at USB v1.1 speeds.
2. I've also checked all BIOS settings to make sure that USB 2.0 is enabled and that USB Legacy support is disabled.
3. I reverted back to Windows XP SP1

So, is there anything I can do that you guys know about besides reinstalling Windows?

UPDATE:
I went to circuit city and got a PCI USB 2.0 card and installed it ... and guess what? It STILL transfers at USB 1.1. *confused*

Drivers cannot change USB 1.1 hardware to USB 2.0. You probably need to add a USB 2.0 PCI card and use it.

Umm... I have used USB 2.0 on this system before though, before I had to repair windows...? The system also says that I have USB 2.0, but it just doesn't look like it's being utilized.

I am not familiar with your Mobo, but in some Mobos the available USB sockets are USB1.1 and the Mobo has headers that are the USB2.

Read the Manual, if such is the case you have to buy USB back plate with USB header and connect it to the Mobo.

JackMDS,

My manual says that I have 8x USB 2.0 ports.. that's all it mentions in there. So, that would lead me to believe that the ports *should* be USB 2.0, yes?

All the ports should be usb 2.0, but the only question I have then is have you actualy tried all of the ports yet? If you haven't, do so, and if you get the same message every time, then the only thing that will likely help is a fresh install..

2 Questions:

Have you tried hooking it up directly to a port on the motherboard or are you trying to hook it up through front usb ports on your case?

If you're trying to hook it up through front usb ports on your case, is it an older Antec case? I know some cases had some snafu where the case manufacturer would connect 2 pins, No Connection and Ground, together on the front connectors when really they should be totally separate. This caused people to run at regular USB speed instead of Hi-Speed USB.

If this isn't the case... then I've got nothing.

I've tried connecting through the back connectors, which are connected to the mainboard and I've also tried connecting through the front USB connections (4 ports front, 4 ports back)

It just doesn't make sense... ALL of the 8 ports should be USB 2.0 - 'least that's what the manual says... and there is a Standard Enhanced USB to PCI controller, which means that it's USB v2... but, it just doesn't wanna work. Guess my next step is to buy a seperate USB v2 card. :(

Just a thought, but have you tried deleting the USB controller from your device manager and then let windows refind it (probably on reboot) and automatically install drivers for it? It may or may not be the best solution, but it could work.

Could be something got messed up in the driver install. I've had some sound card issues in the past I've fixed this way.

GimpyOne - Yea, I did that before the re-install of Windows with no resolution.. sucks, ha? It's like, the mainboard just decided that it's going to transfer at 1.1 speeds and that's that. All of the BIOS settings are set for USB 2.0 too...

From that I'd say it has something to do with your windows installation then. I know I asked it, but my first post was in regard to the warning at the bottom of page 47 of the manual for your board. Evidently only SP1 or SP2 have the proper drivers for USB2.0 to work with your board. If you try to use gigabytes it will force USB1.

Anyway, offhand, did the motherboard this used to be on only have USB1.0?

Do you have another USB device or motherboard to check with?
i.e. is it possible it's the Zen that is screwed up?

Have you tried gigabytes download center to make sure all the motherboard drivers are the latest/greatest/etc? (bios too?)

Well just throwing some more ideas out, you've probably tried, but figured I'd ask. But from what you have said, it looks like you will probably need to do a reinstall.

Gimpy - Yah, I tried all that stuff ... and I did find out that there is a problem with the Zen. I plugged in a USB 2.0 external harddrive and it worked just fine.. I didn't think that there could be a problem with the player that caused it to transfer slow, but STILL transfer.. that's just weird!

Well glad you figured it out. I had something like that happen once, turned out for me the USB cable was bad. Got stepped on/kinked and started getting interference. I swapped it out and it helped.

Anyway, good luck getting the Zen to work at 2.0 and glad you figured it out.
