USB 2.0 card $7.00 shipped

I won't buy from this company because you cannot register with their site without putting your credit card on file with their company. If you register and don't enter your credit card, you get kicked back during the order process and you have to add a credit card to your account information screen. I despise this. Yes, I know, almost every place is keeping stuff on file. But very few require it as part of the site registration process.

I bought one, I thought for $6 it is hard to go wrong. It has to be better than the 1.1 that I am now running.

The credit card requirement is cheesy, but I've bought quite a bit of good cheap stuff from Acortech.

The VIA usb chip is not the best (from what I hear) but what the heck.

I've purchased several times from Acortech, and each time they've shipped same or next-day. They have been as fast as newegg for me.

A while back, almost everything on their website was free shipping (with coupon code). Now it just looks like a few selected items on pricewatch, unfortunately. Still a good company.

richardycc, the speed difference is 12 Mbps vs. 480 Mbps (although the latter seems to be only a theoretical figure).

Go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager/ and open up "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" at the bottom. Mine says "USB 2.0 root hub."

NOT VIA CHIPSET

after i placed the order, i noticed that the image shows an ALI chipset. emailed customer service, they apologize, but it is indeed an ALI chipset card, not a VIA, VIA ones are out of stock. they returned my email quickly, so i'm not saying they are a bad seller.

perhaps you folks who got in earlier will get VIA's.

so, i'm not in on this. i got the $10 one from linkcomm a few months back and i'm happy with that, guess i'll get another. i doubt all ALI chipsets are bad, but there was some bad press on them, so i'm just going to avoid it - too lazy to chase down the details. i read that NEC and lucent/agere are best, VIA is good.

<rant>
how about those $0.75 usb cards on ebay... the ones with $16 shipping.

Got mine today, it is an Ali Chipset. Even though the box that it came in clearly says VIA and doesn't look anything like the card inside. Not even the same shape. Part # on card is CK0001B instead of CK0001 on the box.

Good thing I don't really care!
