USB 2.0 cable to USB1.1 port interface.

This might not be a very bright question.

I bought an internal DVD writer (IOMagic 16x dual layer)
I put it into an enclosue which I bought from here:
http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/11106...DROM%20Enclosure%20SD-525U2ENC%20Black
I set the whole thing up and plugged the USB cable to my laptop

Now what do I do? How do i start burning DVDS?!

My laptop has only USB 1.1. So when I put the cable it gives a message that i dont
have the HI Speed USB controller. But I thought this stuff was supposed to be
backwards compatible.

If I insert the cable and restart, the comp refuses to go into setup. Even after plugging in the cable, the drive dosent show up in My Computer.

So basically after setting up the enclosure and DVD writer, I am not sure what to do now.
Any guidance or comments would be great.

Thanks
😕

It's is backwords compatible, it's just limited to the bandwidth of USB 1.1.
Are you sure that the drive is getting adequate power?
A DVD writer cannot draw enough power just from the USB port itself. You'll need either another connector or another power source.

I have plugged in a 12V adapter to the DVD writer (from the mains). (Actually this goes to the enclosure which is connected to the DVD writer). Is that enough? If I switch off the laptop, and hit the open button on the DVD writer, the DVD drive opens and shuts like a normal
drive, so I think that is not the issue.
My problem is what do I do now? I thought xp will autodetect either new hardware or the fact that the USB cable has been plugged in..

*Really LOST 🙁 *
