USB 2.0 and HP Printer prob

This has me baffled.
The scenario... Asus P4PE motherboard with 4 USB 2.0 ports onboard and room to connect 2 front ports. Powmax case with front USB 1.1 cables a connection. XP Pro operating system. ALL USB ports function as expected except with this stinkin HP 812C printer.
The printer will install on the front USB ports (not desired), it will install on the parallel port all without issues. The problem starts when you plug the printer into one of the onboard USB ports.
Windows detects the printer as an unknown device and refuses to load the driver!?! The error message states that a driver cannot be found for the device and asks to go on line. Of course windows does not find any driver because it's an UNKNOWN device. The next step is to insert the XP CD so the driver can be found on it...again no driver can be found.
Now you go and plug the printer into the front port and wham bam there is the HP 812C drivers (2 to choose from) and the printer is automatically installed. Same with the parallel port. I have plugged in several other devices, camara, mouse, scanner and all loaded without a hitch. The only difference between the onboard and front ports are 2.0 in the back and 1.1 in the front.
No issues listed in device manager and once again ALL USB ports work fine with other devices.
Any ideas out there?

thats really weird, especially because other devices work on them. Try calling HP.

I called HP and they gave me the run around. I've talked to several other techs and no one has ever had this problem. I'm thinking it's just really bad firmware on that printer and of course HP would never own up to that! LOL
Some crazy stuff this is.
Thanks for the input.
