USB 1 to USB 2 wiring diferences?

I have several P3-P4 era ATX PC cases I'd like to reuse. Most have front USB but they are of the older 1.1 standard. Is the wiring different on USB 1.1 compared USB 2.0?

Yes. It has tighter requirements in order to support USB 2.0 speeds. Older front panel connectors may or may not work.

Cabling is either USB compliant or not. There is no USB 1.0 or USB 2.0 cabling or wiring.

There may be a difference in cable shielding between 1.1 and 2.0, but I've never found any problems with using 1.1-era cables and connectors with USB 2.0.

One issue that DID exist was that Antec put some circuitry in some pre-2004 cases that limited the front connectors to USB 1.1.

It is Not a USB 1.1 to USB issue but rather the way USB headers were layout years ago.

The wiring might be different in the sense that some older USB Motherboard Header jacks that are connected to the front would not fit the Header of modern motherboards.

If the headers of the Case's front USB are correctly set it is a toss up. Some USB1.1 cable/plugs would not let you use USB 2.0, but you can try it would not damage it just will not work.

Some of the cases I have have individual wires instead of a wiring block, so it should be easier as long as I can decipher the labels on the wires and motherboards.

thanks all

And that was just as true prior to USB2.0. There is only one standard or design guide that covers the USB motherboard header pin-out, the Intel FPIO, and it is only a recommended pin-out, not required.

The only thing that has changed is that more companies have standardized around the Intel FPIO recommended pin-out. USB2.0 didn't influence this. Time did.

There's no pinout difference between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0.

All of them go
1 Power
3 Data +
5 Data -
7 Ground

Usually, each USB header has two rows of each of these, in parallel.

1 Power 2 Power
3 Data + 4 Data +
5 Data - 6 Data -
7 Ground 8 Ground

Some older mobos wire the USB headers such that each set of USB headers is opposite the other. Those you need to watch out for.

1 Power 2 Ground
3 Data + 4 Data -
5 Data - 6 Data +
7 Ground 8 Power

I've also had issues with older cases, that the USB FP wiring isn't up to standard, and you may encounter errors with the USB when using a USB 2.0 high-speed peripheral.
