USB 1 enuff for burning CDs?

dunno if this is the right place but I have a cdrw and i was thinking of getting an external enclosure for it and giving it to a relative who has an older computer(p3 550mhz). I'm pretty sure the usb in that machine is not 2.0 so i was wondering if that will be fast enough for burning cds? Probably too slow for dvds right?

well i used to use a parallel cable to burn cds back in the day, so usb is still faster 🙂

the parallel cable took 20 min.

daym..that was prolly at 2x or so...i wanna let him burn at least at 8x or so.

If its a usb 1.0 drive then it's designed for that speed, if its 2.0 and you put it in a 1.0 then you will get buffer underrun errors. BTW wrong forum!

uhm...i wanna put an IDE cdrw in a usb enclosure for him...just that its usb 1.1

I had a Sony external CD-RW that was USB 1.0. It sucked massive ass. If the person you would be giving it to does not have any burner, sure it will work however you will probably be making a whole lot of coasters.

what speed was it?

CD transfer speed is 1x = 150KB/s

USB 1.0 = 1.5Mb/s = 192KB/s
USB 1.1 = 12Mb/s = 1536KB/s

1536KB/s / 150KB/s = 10x

If all your USB hardware is USB 1.1, you should be able to burn as high as 10x. If it's 1.0, then 1x.

No. We used to have a bunch of USB CDRW's in the office. Constantly got buffer underrun errors.

Burn at 4x and you shouldn't have any problems. I do it all the time on my laptop when I don't feel like breaking out the USB2.0 PCMCIA card.
