USB 1.1 cords shouldn't go further than 10 ft, 2.0 16 feet?

I got a USB extension cord and on it it says USB 1.1 corded devices shouldn't exceed 10 feet of USB cable, and 2.0 devices shouldn't go higher than 16 feet...

any truth to this? I want to run 20 ft of USB cable for my printer, are there any detrimental effects to running more cord than specified?? I've never even heard of these limits before...

i think that if you use a longer cable, there will be too much resistance. similiar to how cat5 cables can only be x feet in length.

longest ive seen a 1.1 is 16 feet..... the longer you go with a usb cable, the more the speed drops... belkin actually puts a graph on the back of their products that shows this... I guess the signal just isnt strong enough... you could try going 10 feet to a usb hub and then 10 feet from the hub to the computer... if its a wall powered hub it might work.....

I remember reading somewhere that USB isn't coated as properly as say, LAN ethernet cables, and my guess is that the attenuation would be too great at such distances.

Actually, I believe stray capacitance is the enemy.

According to the USB spec, extension cords are illegal. I'll bet that cable does not have the USB logo on it.

Try it. If it works, use it. If not, it's not going to cause world pandemonium, so just trash it if it doesn't work.

btw..... WHY?! do you want your printer 20 feet away from your computer?? Or is it that you need to run the wires 20 feet to avoid going across the floor or something?

Yes, google on it. I remember checking on this one time and found (many places I believe) that you can run the max spec length to a hub, then the max again to a hub...
