Is it just a firmware difference? Isn't the hardware exactly the same? Could I just "flash" something to get 2.0?

It's a different generation of controller on the motherboard, I've never heard of a firmware upgrade for any motherboard that could upgrade 1.x to 2.

PCI cards are cheap, and PCMCIA laptop adapters are also available.

and no offense, but someone with 46,000 posts should know that

They're all in Off Topic :)

I think that I've seen the cards for around $10~$15.

Wow what's with all the insults?

If you think I only post in OT, you're a flaming fvcking moron. If you think having a certain number of posts on an internet forum automatically qualifies someone for a certain level of intelligence in absolutely every topic of life, well you're a moron too.

Anyway, I know there were some old PCI expansion cards that were 1.1 when released, but you could run a little firmware update thingy from the manufacturer when 2.0 came out to make the card function at 2.0 speeds.

That's why I asked about other pieces of hardware.

Yea there is no firmware upgrade to go to 2.0:( I'm sure if they made the controllers to that they could be written to, they probably COULD do that. Hubs also have this problem in that they only support 1.1, my USB hub on my older LCD monitor is 1.1 and when I plug it into my computer, I get a warning message saying High speed device plugged into low speed hub (USB2.0 drive in 1.1 hub which plugs into computer).

LOL dude chill......

Having 46000 posts means you have been lurking around for a substantial portion of nearly every day for the last 5 years since you signed up.....I would have thought you would have picked up some useful information or even learned how to use the search function!!

hmm, this guy seems to be singled out because he has a high number of posts.

I wonder if he was a newbie would you treat him in the same manner.

Just my 0.02 cents.

If I ask you a single, specific question about absolutely anything over the past 5 years, would you be able to answer absolutely any question? Of course not. I've focused on other things besides USB. Now get off my ass, k jerkfaces?

Wow, everyone here is being more than charitable with insults today . . . good question, I wondered this at one time as well.

Just a head's up, if you're upgrading to 2.0 on a laptop using something less than XP or 2000, beware as you might run into issues. I tried adding a PCMCIA adapter to my Dell a few years back and never got Win98SE to accept the card. That dashed my hopes of adding an external hdd.

Anyway, good luck on this.

We would probably be more helpful...yes!!

So if he hasn't been looking at hardware related stuff on Anandtech (a computer hardware site) then what the hell has he been doing for 5 years ....

Fine; lurk for 5 years and do nothing but with 46000 posts...he sure has done a lot of posting!!

That is an average of 25 post per day...every day for 5 years ....very active member....

I would personally like to think that I could figure out most stuff by doing a little bit of research.....I ask questions as a last resort...not a first port of call..

Lol in all fairness we were a bit harsh....which parts of anandtech do you frequent if it is not hardware??

Wow, someone who believes in doing research yourself before asking questions? Cool. I totally agree and that's what I pound into the heads of dumbasses in OT all the time. Who cares where I frequent?

Anyway, I really don't feel like proving to you what research I've done myself, but I've done quite a bit. If you won't accept that, that's not my problem. Why all the bullsh|t? Answer the goddamn fvcking question or STFU. If you don't want to do either, you also have the option of eating my shorts.

 Did I quote DaveSimmons? No. I wasn't talking to DaveSimmons.

Jeebus, reading comprehension for the win.

<edit>
BTW, thanks DaveSimmons :p

Why? This is the fun part of the forum. We can't just be talking hardware everytime. Once in awhile a little play and drama keeps the forum interesting.
