Are free proxies generally secure enough to be doing https passwords etc over? Is there any way for them to scrape passwords or other encrypted data?

for example, I was looking at these.
http://www.hidemyass.com/proxy-list/

I am working in Mexico, and have some sites that are complaining that I'm not in the USA.. and I can't figure out how to get around that so was looking into proxies.

I am not trying to HIDE anything I'm doing, I just want the site to see that my connection is coming from the US so it works.

If you have any suggestions for free USA prox servers that would be great. I only need it for a few days.
Maybe I should be looking at Tor?

Thanks.

Thanks, lots of info and stuff there.
I still am a little unsure about the security on the free and even some of the paid proxies. I assume it would be easy for them to scrape my passwords as I type them?

If you are that concerned about security, then don't use a free proxy. Most respectable VPNs will only cost a few dollars for one month's service (eg, Private Internet Access = $6.95/month), and that's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

One other option is to ask a US-based friend or relative to setup a VPN tunnel from their router and use that.

Thanks.. Private Internet Access sounds good. I tried it, but all the connections I've tried are blacklisted. Looks like I'll cancel and have to wait until I get back to the good ole US of A.
