Still tough to beat Lithuania. I am watching China vs. Lithuania right now. Their 3-pointers are DEADLY accurate.

I'm wondering too. Guess we'll find out when they put it on TV tonight? I even tried checking the Spanish sports newspaper Marca but they had nothing about it.

Obligatory NY bias: Mr. Marbury is from Brooklyn, baby, wo0t! (not to mention a NY Knickerbocker, double wo0t!) :D

A :cookie: for you Steph!

The commotion regarding Larry Brown and the opposing coach? If so (from foxsports.com):

In international play you have to register timeouts with the scorer's table. Larry Brown had registered a timeout with about a minute to go in the game, before the U.S. pulled away and built up an 11-point lead. The Spanish team interpreted the timeout as the U.S. rubbing it in.

When the U.S. coaching staff attempted to explain the situation to the Spanish brass, they wanted none of it. Larry Brown had a finger pointed in his face and the situation was seconds away from being very, very ugly.

Also the spanish coach complained that the usa got away with a lot of travelling and thus were playing NBA rules and not IOC rules. I laughed a lot at that one. I watched the first few games and the refs would call travelling for NO REASON. The replays clearly showed no travelling. Lebron james in particular seemed to get called a lot. Even if they did travel, it's only fair...

If USA had Steve Kerr or some other second/third string outside specialist they would get the gold for sure. I think it's a tossup whether they'll get a medal. SPrewell shouldn't choke the spanish coach, he should choke the US selection committee.

It's about damn time. Having the best players in the world in the NBA yet an Olympic team that sucks is just embarassing.

That's partially true... since more than half of the best players (Kobe, Shaq, TMac, etc) decided to op out of this opportunity for various reasons and were replaced with younger unproven players.

The Spanish coach is a little baby.

http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer04/basketball/news/story?id=1868303

ATHENS, Greece -- Top-seeded and previously unbeaten Spain is out of the medal round in men's basketball, and the Spaniards aren't happy about it.

As the teams left the court Thursday after Team USA's 102-94 victory, Spanish coach Mario Pesquera and United States coach Larry Brown yelled and pointed at each other about a late U.S. timeout. After about a minute, they had to be separated by their assistants.

Spain's Mario Pesquera, right, makes his point to the U.S. coaches.
"I'm very happy with the way my team played," Pesquera said. "I'm not happy with the way things turned out.''

Pesquera was upset Brown called a timeout with 23 seconds left and the Americans leading by 11 points. He let the U.S. coach know it as they left the court.

"I had -- and I stress the word 'had' -- a lot of respect for Larry Brown," said Pesquera, who smirked and shook his head when he heard Brown explain that he tried to rescind the timeout. "Dean Smith would have never done anything like that.''

Timeouts in Olympic basketball can only be called by the coach, not by players. Brown had gone to the scorer's table to request the timeout after a Team USA turnover, then tried to wave it off once he realized how much time had elapsed. Officials would not allow Brown to rescind the timeout.

Said Brown: "We had basically turned the ball over twice against their press, and you know I'm still trying to teach and win a game. But when I saw that some seconds had run off the clock, and I saw how late it was, I tried to wave it off, but they wouldn't let me. ...

"Hopefully I'll learn to handle these situations, which are new to me, a little bit better."

This was Spain's chance to shine, especially after rolling to a 5-0 record before the Olympic quarterfinals. But the Spanish were paired against a mercurial U.S. squad that lost twice in the opening round yet this time hit 55 percent from 3-point range.

The Spaniards lost, and now they'll play for seventh place.

"Let's be honest,'' Pesquera said. "The Americans have played to 40 percent of their capacity in two of their games. I think it's very strange to take part in a competition that rewards teams that lose.''

Pau Gasol led Spain with 29 points but was held to just four in the fourth quarter by a tenacious American defensive effort, which quieted a pro-Spanish crowd of 14,500 that included Spain's King Juan Carlos.

"It was said that the public supports the weaker team. I think in this case the public was solidly behind the stronger team because we were the stronger team,'' said Pesquera, who also complained that the officials allowed the Americans to get away with multiple traveling violations.

"I think this game was played under NBA rules, not FIBA rules,'' he said.

But he does have a point about the elimination system, IMO.

I think they should take the reigning NBA champs and send them. The Pistons are much better than the all star team, as they have chemistry, they know each other, and they have played 90 plus games together.

Would that be a good idea for the winning team though? I mean, in the past, you can see that players who go to the olympics get injured/have bad seasons, so instead of taking a star player or two, you basically tire out the entire team.

I'd say get the best NCAA team.

The Spanish coach is a damm cry baby....somebody give him a tissue please...before theres a flood.
He's crying because his team finished 5-0 in pool play and earned a #1 seed.
So what reward did they get for being the #1 seed ?? They got to play the US....bahahahaa..
I'd be pissed and cried like a baby too.

Consider this starting team:

C: Shaq
PF: KG
SF: TMac
SG: Kobe
PG: JKidd

Yowza! Add Duncan to the mix and you have the six best players in the world. Too bad five of them stayed home. JKidd is the only truly legitimate bail-out -- he's having knee surgery!

Anyhow, I would rather have Ray Allen or Michael Redd on the the current national team than Carmello. We need a shooter! Heck, Allan Houston, gimpy knee and all would be better.

the Spanish coach proved to be a sore loser and embarassed his country, imo.

LB is among the coaches who most respects the game of basketball (and international basketball too). there's no way in hell that LB was trying to boast.

The Spanish coach's comments took away from the solid performance his team put against the US, and the 5-0 they went in the qualifying rounds. Gasol looked good tonight, taking apart Odom and Boozer whenever Duncan sat on the bench.
