Players from the United States women's national soccer team filed an appeal Friday to overturn a 2020 decision against their equal pay lawsuit.

"And yet, that is exactly what the women players on the US National team do -- they play more games and achieve better results in order to be paid about the same amount as the men's national team players per game.
By any measure, that is not equal pay, and it violates federal law."

er... what?!
they're paid the same as men per game and since they play more games, they make more $ overall than men.

based on the article, i dont see a pay disparity for women.
what am i missing???

The statement is asserting that because the women's team plays more games and wins much more then the men's team, they should get more money. Aka, performance bonus.

Considering the USWNT is a dominant force and consistently #1 or close to it, and has won 4 world cups, while the USMNT struggles in the world rankings (and has won 0 world cups), I'd argue they deserve significantly more pay than their male counterparts.

I only have a fairly superficial understanding of the details, but now much revenue does the women's team bring in vs the men's? For some reason I seem to remember that despite the women's team being far more successful, the men's team still brings in more revenue because men's soccer is simply a drastically larger draw than women's worldwide. I think you could reason a very solid argument that the men should be paid more if they have more financial "value."

I also don't know enough about federal law to truely understand the argument that it may be in violation.

I do find this topic really interesting, though.

lol this video goes over in full detail why the women are full of shit. The case was dismissed because it was easily found that the women were paid more than the men. Kinda hard to argue "OMG MAH EQUALITY" when your wallet is fatter lol.

They are sincerely as dumb as a box of rocks, so it's not surprising. This is simply a non-winnable case on the basis of "equality" or "sexism" because they were offered the EXACT SAME thing as the men's - but they rejected it.

Here is what they had through their agreement, and you notice, the men have much more of a "pay to play" model.

Exxxxxxxxxxcept, they also get TONS of benefits that the mens team doesn't.

The end result? The women were paid more, hence the case was dismissed (and laughed at because they are stupid as shit). Even when you do it on a "per game" basis, it's still significantly more.

I thought that they "lost" their prior lawsuit and that is why they are appealing. Memory is that they get paid the same for actual game checks but the men's team makes considerably more still because of advertising bonuses and whatnot. The prior judge ruled that since the game checks were equal the pay is legally equal and the other money, where the bulk of the actual pay comes from, is legally superfluous.

But maybe that ruling was already overturned on appeal and I just forgot.

From my little understanding of it, I think they negotiated for the higher base salary and benefits even though they were originally offered the same contract as the men. So they've made their bed...

Regardless of their success, if women's soccer is not as popular with the fan base, it just isn't going to bring in as much advertising money, ticket sales, etc.

It seems to me that the women's team rate of success (wins) is a fleeting kind of thing whereby what would happen with their gross pay should they, given how the law of averages work, eventually decline in the standings? Will their pay still be tied to how well they perform should they succumb to that possibility? Or will some other factor be offered up as reasoning to be paid by some other metric to keep their income from being affected should the team see their fortunes suffer a slump.

Easy solution, just take the higher proceeds from the men's leagues and redistribute the funds to the women's leagues under the pretense of equity and reparations for past misogyny in order to create a more level pay field.

If that don't work, women can identify as male soccer players, pump themselves up full of hormones while they transition and join the men's teams in order to move up in pay and benefits.

Of course, we can just get rid of genders in sports and allow everyone to compete together while equalizing pay with some union style seniority chart regardless of performance or abilities, everyone wins a trophy, gets paid accordingly and all is well.

Of course, as with so many other sports where men's and women's leagues exist in the same sport because of the size and strength advantage men have over women, having a mixed league would create a distinct disadvantage for the women as they would be competing for the same positions that the men are. Football, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, baseball, weight lifting, volleyball etc. would take most women out of contention due to their being undersized and physically weaker.

There may be other sports where the obvious advantages of being physically bigger and stronger aren't an issue, but it seems to me as far as soccer is concerned, the women playing in that sport know very well they're much better off fighting for pay and benefits equality by being segregated as they are from the men.

I mean, if the women's teams really wanted true equality, they'd be playing against the men's teams in their respective sports and not be taking advantage of the separation between the two as things are.

Apologies if I appear to be sexist, it just seems to me to be the logical facts of the matter as they presently exist. I am very open to ideas on this topic that would cause me to modify my position and I look forward to seeing them in this thread.

I'm sure the women's sports get the same ratings, sponsorships, licenses etc as the men's sports. In 2021 everything is equal. Or is it equitable?
