While the header by Abby was simply awesome and very very well done the pass from Rapinoe was more impressive. Those of you who have played soccer can understand how freaking difficult that pass was ... it wasn't a direct cross perse (i.e. a simple horizontal pass from one side to the middle). This pass was down the field AND across.
You may see a lot of passes like this one that land on the ground for a player to run to and then score but you aren't going to see to many go right to the players head.
Lets give Abby additional credit as well, not for finishing, but for getting to the spot and being ready to handle it. That sure as hell is not an easy one to finish either.
My wife and kids and I were listening to this in the car as we were driving my daughter to soccer camp (ironic huh) yesterday afternoon and man the announcers and crowd went apesh*t when it happened (so did we) but to see it via DVR when we got home was even more impressive. Truly awesome.
Red Card/PK deal -- While the rule does state that a Red Card has to be given with foul in the box on an obvious goal scoring attempt I think the call was BS. If you watch the replay Marta did all the work to get the call. BEFORE anything really went down Marta leaps in the air goes spread eagle and lands on her back and on Beuhler. Yes Beuhler had her jersey for all of about 3 seconds but that was a BS call all the way.
The PK retake was also BS -- watch just about every ELITE soccer game and 2 things happen on PKs - (1) Someone enters the box early and (2) the goalie moves off the line too early and you know what -- NO ONE CALLS IT! So they pick yesterday to call it, ridiculous. It is the letter of the law correct but still horrible.
Fake Injury - the fake injury stuff is there and always will be in soccer. I hate it, hate it, hate it. I cannot begin to tell you how irritating that is as a fan and a soccer coach. However that crap by Erika yesterday is the absolute worst I have ever seen. If you watch the slo-mo vids you see her actually look left and right for refs as she walks in front of the goal and rolls to the ground. That is the most blatant fake acting job ever. And of course the miracle stretcher was even more demeaning to the game of soccer. Thank goodness she got a Yellow but still not enough punishment in my mind -- causing your team lose ... priceless!
BTW cudos to the male announcer for speaking his mind about the poor sportsmanship from Brazil and the horrible injury faking. Frankly I am glad he said a few words about it and was clearly happy Brazil lost. I am sure many in the public will chastise him for saying what he was thinking but dammit if a US player did that crap I would expect him to comment on them also.
Great game that will surely be getting aired on ESPN Classic as an Instant Classic right away -- hell ESPN already replayed the game last night at Midnight as well.
