CR is also the magazine that tested a V6 Camaro vs. a V8 Firebird, and chose the Camaro as the winner.

IMO, CR is not a good source of automotive information.

bwhahahahaha. those guys are winnars.

wow... that's just.... wow:Q

talk about maroons (morons)

The correct spelling is moran.

Car and Driver pretty much agreed on that the 911 was way ahead of the Viper and Z06... so how is this innacurate?

A regular Carrera will get it's doors blown off a Z06 or Viper. These people can't drive, because from a stop, from a roll, whenever, a Z06 or Viper will leave a Carrera standing still.

The car that beats out the Z06 and Viper is the new 997 911 Turbo. It can match their acceleration while offering superior grip, more precise handling and better breaking. But it costs $125,000.

I don't think the test was a straight up drag race, so your point is Moo.

I've driven them all, and you'd be a fool to choose a base model 911 over a C6 Z06. We're talking hugely different acceleration figures. The Z06 can top 200mph. :Q

I haven't driven a new 997 Turbo, but I can comfortably say I'd take one over a Z06.

yup, cr buys cars annonymously.

they do have their own agenda, don't be fooled. Someone mentioned this in another post. Look who they are owned by.

if you think they have an agenda, then post the facts yourself.

Remember, drag racing means little to high performance cars that are meant to be raced on a track.

If I'm getting a 911 then it has to be a turbo, and why not test that if they're testing the Z06?
And the Viper, they really don't know what it's supposed to be do they? And then throwing in stuff like the Lexus and Nissan is just stupid, they aren't near the same class of car.

If I have $100k budget for a sports car there is no way in hell I'm getting one of their "recommended" cars.

Consumer reports FTL. They're wrong so often. They hate American Cars...no matter what. My family had a 1983 Chevy Malibu that CR said would fall apart, rattle, have a poor ride, etc...that car lasted 20 years and 2 hand-me-downs...and it still had great power, HELLA SMOOTH ride, and nothing rattled...NOTHING. My 2-year old Sentra has like 3 rattles already...CR sucks.

although i wouldn't say the 911 is the fastest or cheapest sports car, but i'd have to say it's the best blend of performance, comfort, style, feel, safety, price and reliability.

i wouldn't. although the 911 might cost more per scheduled service, the fact that the car will run nearly forever and still be worth 5 figures regardless of mileage more than outweighs the advantage of cheaper service on a car that won't last forever and will be worthless after 10 years (have you seen the value of used vettes? toyota camrys from the same vintage are worth more).

i recently saw a 911SC is amazing condition for sale. price: about $14,000. mileage: 260,000! meanwhile, your average vette that's a decade NEWER is lucky to sell for more than $5,000 with less than half the miles. $10,000 buys a lot of services, and you get to enjoy a superior car in the meantime.

"The Viper was rated as "Poor" in most "Comfort and Convenience" areas including "Ride," "Noise," and "Front seat comfort.""

Are they f'ing stupid? To base they're overall ratings on crap like this, this is why Consumer Reports will always be the armpit of car reviews. A Viper has been about being fastest at a race track

Too bad it's missing it's original goal ;)

But yeah, CR is stupid with cars.

In recent years CR's auto reviews have actually started to mirror Car&Driver, Road&Track etc. They test the cars on a track, measure acceleration/skidpad numbers etc. But unlike those magazines they factor in predicted reliability into their ratings and have more of a practical bias in their recommendations. Their favorite cars are almost always the same as those chosen by car mags (excluding reliability.) The results of this test are no different than any other car mag that has rated these cars.

sports cars are almost never practical, especially coupes without 2+2 seating. reliability shouldn't be predicted. i can predict that a Lambo will have great reliability because it costs so much, but we all know i'd be dead wrong. how reliable they THINK a car will be is of little use. how reliable cars of previous generations have been is a far better indicator, and im sure most people will agree.

Which is why Consumer Reports gets their reliability information by surveying their readers. With a brand new model they don't list reliability, but do factor in historical brand reliability.

well, dodge failed to do that too.

yeah, the viper definitely isn't the best track car. chrysler/dodge need to tune that engine more - 8.3L and not much more HP than a LS7 (granted it has 60lb-ft more torque). however, i would definitely rate the viper as THE badass american car, even if it isn't the fastest

anyways, imo, it's sad to see MBZ SL550 beating a Lotus Elise by their standard.

but oh well, different strokes for different folks.

The Lotus is a 4 cyl w/ 190 hp and the benz is a V8 w/ 510 hp...

I'd enjoy my straight aways a lot more than you'd enjoy your corners.

i bet you wont enjoy cops on your tail though ;)

straights are fun for a little, but i'd definitely throw in way more turns than straights in a track.

I have a problem with the 911 winning because they predicted poor reliability for the Vette.

Since when were Vettes not reliable?
